I rounded a corner after having dinner in the former French Concession here in Shanghai and came across this stunning bouquet. Apparently a young couple was celebrating an occasion over a meal, and she had ridden up on her bicycle and surprised him with this spectacular offering.
Each flower was in perfect bloom, as if controlled by some unseen energy that understood the perfection of the moment.
It occurred to me how easy it is to overlook the beauty in this. Not just the aesthetic image itself, which is the outer satisfaction that comes with experiencing visceral beauty, but the inner experience of spontaneous joy that comes from witnessing and celebrating others love for one another.
That awareness made the aroma of those flowers so much sweeter.
